William Willcox A at Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama
William Willcox A, is a historic building at Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama, that houses the School of Architecture. This building had to be completely gutted to the old wooden and brick structure and renovated. Many of the floor beams, having deteriorated over time, had to be replaced as did the entire mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems. Many of the building’s unique architectural elements, such as the grand entrance staircase, were saved and restored. KHAFRA ‘s design for Willcox A included state of the art mechanical, electrical, data, and security systems. The elegant structure of the roof system was exposed on the upper floor studios so they could be used as a teaching tool. The piping and ductwork were color coordinated so they, too, became instruments to be used in the educational process. The exterior brick walls were cleaned and restored to bring this facility to its original glory. |
